Gaspard Yurkievich a Bread and Butter Barcelona - BBB 2007 January

Gaspard Yurkievich is part of a new generation of designers emerging from Paris who combine the creative flair of London with the historic grandeur of France. Born in 1972 in Paris, of French and Argentine origin, Yurkievich studied at studio Berçot from 1991 to 1993. Whilst still at college, he undertook an internship at Thierry Mugler in 1992, moving to Jean-Paul Gaultier a year later. In 1994 he went to assist Jean Colonna. This experience at an independent label was invaluable, allowing Yurkievich to absorb every facet of Fashion design and production. In 1997, he started his own womenswear label; that same year he was awarded the prestigious womenswear prize at the Hyères Festival. In 1998 he received funding from ANDAM, an organization set up by the French Ministry of Culture to support young designers, and showed his first collection in Paris. Yurkievich?s work explores female sexuality and modern elegance alongside historic references, explicitly presented in shows such as his Spring/Summer 2002 collection, which was modeled by professional dancers and shown in the legendary Crazy Horse revue bar. His interest in shape ? often long, lean and sharp ? is reminiscent of Mugler, while his ability to inject something of the mood of his urban sprawl owes a little to Gaultier and Colonna. Yet Yurkievich adds his own and energetic spin with the use of sumptuous fabrics and witty interpretations of classic garments. Today Yurkievich is a leading representative of a new generation of young French designers, who effortless combine glamour with a youthful edge. FASHION NOW (Taschen)
